Sara Cattin lives in Turin (IT) and is a multidisciplinary art worker focused on visual and
participatory projects in marginal contexts. She trained at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and
developed an independent approach to critical studies at the Dutch Art Institute (NL). Since
2023, she’s curating and coordinating CROSS Residence, a programme by Fondazione CROSS
ETS for performance and contemporary dance in relation to rural territories and communities,
located in between lakes Maggiore and Orta. As tutor and coordinator she also collaborated with Fondazione Pistoletto and Accademia UNIDEE in Biella.

					
In her practice she tackles research by investigating territories from a social,
economic and cultural point of view, developping new ways to look at things through an imaginative and speculative lence. Of this
kind, “Maintenance of What?” is a project researcing transhumant pastoralism as a practice
and device (hosted by Bulegoa in 2023, Bilbao). In 2025 she worked on a co-shared research, Mondatinanza (CAP24020, Alta Val Seriana) about mountanous communities and human perception concerning climate and environmental clanges.&#38;nbsp;Since 2020, she
co-curates the transfemnist platform and reading platform on sci-fi and
distopian narratives called ISTERIKA ISTORIKA.&#38;nbsp;

MONTADINANZA is a term created by organization CAP24020 –taking from the word cittadinanza: citizenship- to identify the society of people living on mountanous areas.


The project invited a group of 8 young people (17-25 years old) and 2 artists to create a research programme focusing on climate change and its effect on the Alta Val Seriana’s practices and economies, looking into the fast mutation that winter territories and culture are vitnessing since years. The Alta Val Seriana, as area rich of turist infrastructures, is effected not only by lack of natural snow but also by cultural, environmental and social policies that fail to develope valuable economies (and practices), and to overcome problems such as depopulation, loss of social services, poor cultural exchange, and others.


In 3 steps –Prologue, Action and Epilogue– the group undertook a journey of meetings, hikes, and workshops.


The artistic process aimed to rethink the concept of competition and record winning that feels so radicated in Alpine territories hosting professional sport activties and the related turist sistem. The idea was to turn a prize, an award, into something that rather than being a goal can generate energy and express a desire for the future.


While creating different kinds of trophies and medals in sculptural tecniques, the group was guided into finding enties –people, organizations and things- to award for their best effort into generating sustainability, personal and collective growth, webs of relationships, valuable jobs, equity, and social structure.

ESP (crossed out) is a project that investigates the possibilities of the mind when guided by the ‘blind’ medium of voice and sound, aiming to  explore liminal spaces in between bodily sensation and imagination.
 
The term Extra Sensory Perception refers to all those mental phenomena that allow information to be received without the mediation of the senses, such as telepathy and clairvoyance. 
With ESP (crossed out) we want to overturn this definition and create an interactive experience that uses the voice in headphones to guide—through stories, scores, mental visualizations—on a journey of amplification of the imagination, in between the real and the liminal. The research aims first and foremost to experiment with the potential of audio narration, but also to move away from the dictatorship of vision and visual medias.
The work is made of several audio tracks that can adapt to different kinds of space, leading to different trajectories in which people their own individual journey, but also interact with others through encounters and gazes. 
Each track addresses a different aspect of perception shitfing: 
in the mirror we are guided through observation until we lose perception of our own image; 
inside the car of a dead person we are guided to perceive&#38;nbsp; ourselves aging; in a dark library we are going back to childhood, in between dream and wakefulness; 
in complete darkness, we see a place that remains in us with the same intensity of a real memory; 
a cinema for one spectator only is where we can listen to a film and find an erotic intimacy.

ISTERIKA ISTORIKA is a Platform for sharing, reading, and thinking aloud in which to listen, discuss and interpret the words of those who questions feminisms of all kinds through the lens of science fiction and related genres, enabling the imagination of other realities: future, eccentric, dystopian, alien, (im)possible realities...&#38;nbsp;
We&#38;nbsp;believe in a transfeminist practice of horizontal sharing, orbiting between imaginaries capable of going beyond the dystopia of the present.

Started in 2020, ISTERIKA was founded in Turin (IT) by Caterina Giansiracusa, Sara Cattin, Denise Cappadonia and Marti del Romano mainly as a monthly reading group at the independent queer bookshop Nora Book &#38;amp; Coffee. 
The reeding club is ongoing and can be accessed by contacting the bookshop.

As a long term project, ISTERIKA’s Platform produces curated activities such as workshops, cineforums and participatory installations in different contexts, opening spaces of in-depth study that intertwine reading to artistic practices. 

Over the years ISTERIKA has collaborated with BACO Base Arte Contemporanea Odierna (Bergamo), Spazio Hydro (Biella), Salone del Libro di Torino, Cripta 747 and Almanac Inn (Turin), Lavanderia a Vapore (Collegno), Edhéa - Valais school of Art (Sierre), Volumes (Zurich), performance artist Tea Andreoletti (IT). 

ISTERIKA adopts a horizontal and open methodology, in which knowledge is built collectively and the group always remains open to new participations. Free of homework and through a (non)mediation aimed at individual empowerment, ISTERIKA wants to reduce the individual performativity by proposing a contaminated and non-academic research path.

The selection of titles is curated by intercepting suggestions and proposals. The bibliography, which is always evolving, ranges from fiction to theory, passing through graphic novels, poetry, and hybrid literary registers.

La selezione dei titoli è curata intercettando suggestioni e proposte. La bibliografia, sempre in divenire, spazia dalla narrativa alla saggistica, passando per la graphic novel, la poesia e registri letterari ibridi.

Queste Oscure Materie has been a workshop journey into an unknown and viscous territory for children and young people who encountered for the first time the manipulation of the imagination that lies between the fantastical and the real, learning from their hands what they think and teaching them to imagine.

Queste Oscure Materie is also the title of Philip Pullman's fantasy trilogy whose first volume, Northern Lights, introduces the ancient concept of the daimon, or, in the novel, animals that accompany each person from birth to death, sharing thoughts, experiences and the entirety of their soul.
The project has been developed in two parallel clay manipulation workshops, in collaboration with Associazione Acmos, which in the Barriera di Milano district of Turin focuses on inclusion and creative participation, and with Area Onlus, which supports children and young people with motor disabilities and neurodivergence.
In the novel, no one knows true solitude as it is impossible to be separated from their dæmons, which change their animal form based on the context, landscape, climate, and necessity: when Lyra Belacqua, the protagonist, secretly speaks to her daimon, Pantalaimon becomes a moth, making her lip language expressions and signs intelligible; when they are in the icy northern desert, he becomes a snow cat; when he and Lyra rest, he returns to being an ermine.
Clay does not know error. Just as a daimon stabilizes itself only when it becomes an adult together with its companion, clay can be a presence capable of accompanying an almost infinite transformation.
With the children and young people of Area, we focused on the sensoriality of the material, learning simple techniques to feel the limits and potentials of our hands and the material itself. From a flat dimension, we worked towards three-dimensionality, which in therapeutic terms is defined as 'standing up.'
With the participants and operators of Acmos, we explored the concept of the imprint. From the mark of the hands, to that of the room, to the paw prints in all of Pantalaimon’s mutations. We traveled between the abstract and the figurative dimensions, where everyone introduced their own hybrid or animalistic imagination, inspired by anime, the real world, and cinema.
The two groups also worked collectively by passing materials and artifacts between them. At Area, we created the colors that were used at Acmos in the process of constructing the paws; at Acmos, we created the slab marked with lines which was used at Area to create an almost impossible-to-reassemble puzzle-landscape.

IT


Queste Oscure Materie è stato un percorso laboratoriale in territorio ignoto e vischioso per bambinɜ e ragazzɜ che hanno incontrato per la prima volta la manipolazione dell’immaginario che sta tra il fantastico e il reale, imparando dalle mani ciò che esse pensano e insegnano ad immaginare.

Queste Oscure Materie è anche il titolo della trilogia fantasy di Philip Pullman il cui primo volume La Bussola d’Oro introduce l’antico concetto del daimon, ovvero, nel romanzo, animali che accompagnano ogni persona dalla nascita alla morte, condividendo pensieri, esperienze e il complesso dell’intera anima.

Il progetto si è sviluppato in due laboratori paralleli di manipolazione dell’argilla, insieme all’Associazione Acmos, che nel quartiere torinese Barriera di Milano si occupa di inclusione e partecipazione creativa, e ad Area Onlus, che accoglie bambinɜ e ragazzɜ con disabilità motoria e neuro divergenza.

Nel romanzo, nessuno conosce la vera solitudine in quanto è impossibile separarsi dai propri daimon, che infatti mutano la loro forma animale in base al contesto, al paesaggio, al clima, alla necessità: quando Lyra Belacqua, la protagonista, parla in segreto al suo daimon, Pantalaimon diventa una falena, così da rendere intelligibili espressioni e segni del linguaggio labiale; quando si trovano nel deserto di ghiaccio del Nord, diventa un gatto delle nevi; quando lui e Lyra si riposano, torna ad essere un ermellino.

L’argilla non conosce l’errore. Come il daimon si stabilizza solo quando diventa adulto insieme alla sua persona, la materia argillosa può essere una presenza capace di accompagnare un mutamento quasi infinito.

Con lɜ bambinɜ e ragazzɜ di Area ci siamo concentratɜ sulla sensorialità del materiale, imparando semplici tecniche per poter sentire limiti e potenzialità della mano e del materiale in sé. Da una dimensione piatta si è lavorato in direzione di una tridimensionalità, ovvero verso ciò che, in campo terapeutico, viene definito il “tirarsi in piedi”.

Con lɜ partecipanti e operatorɜ di Acmos è stato fatto un percorso di esplorazione dell’impronta. Dal segno delle mani, a quello della stanza, alle impronte delle zampe in tutte le mutazioni di Pantalaimon. Abbiamo viaggiato tra la dimensione astratta e quella figurativa, in cui ognunǝ ha introdotto il proprio immaginario ibrido o animalesco, ispirato dagli anime, dal mondo reale e cinematografico.

I due gruppi hanno lavorato anche collettivamente passandosi materiali e manufatti. Ad Area abbiamo creato i colori che ad Acmos abbiamo usato nel processo di costruzione delle zampe; ad Acmos abbiamo creato la lastra segnata di linee con cui, ad Area, abbiamo creato un puzzle-paesaggio quasi impossibile da ricomporre.

This series of performances is part of broader research on transhumant pastoralism I started in 2018, conducting interviews with various people who work and live within the valleys of the province of Biella, the mountainous area in the North-West of Italy where I live and come from.

Transhumant pastoralism is a kind of semi-nomadic pastoral activity that raises animals while moving between the mountain tops and the low lands with a seasonal rhythm. In Biella, transhumant pastoralism shares its traditional territorial identity with the world of the capitalistic industry. 


In Maintenance of What? I transformed the recording of the conversations I had with young shepherds into scripts. Questions go from “Do you listen to music when you are at the grazing?” to “What does it mean to maintain a mountain?” and “How does Europe undermine your autonomy?”. &#38;nbsp;The aim of the interviews is to learn about those embodied practices that are able to reconnect humanity to a physical reality, looking at things directly from the point of view of who works with land and navigates the web of private and public land property. By performing the scripts the project aims to create a collective moment for learning through the voices of those seeking for a social amplifier. &#38;nbsp;

workshop
In 2022 the project developed into a workshop in collaboration
with the secondary school of Lessona (Biella, Italy). The aim
was to learn about shepherds’ relationship to the environment
through a day of interviews, while accompanying the spring
transhumance of the Croso family to Val Sessera (Biella, Italy).

					
The enquiry wants to investigate the relationship between walkers
and pets, shepherds and live stock; the perception of a humanised
“natural” environment; the concept of “guesting”: who is guiding
who? Are the animals giuding us? Are we accompaining the
shepherd or is he/she letting us to follow them?

					
The interviews happened while walking, guided by a set of visual
and written guidelines that require the use of intuition and
improvisation.

Hystorical-social context:
the workshop took place during the event Transumando
organised by DocBI (research center of Biella) and Oasi Zegna.
The Zegna Group is an industrial establishment that between
1800 and 1900 constructed the road that connects the hight valley
to the low lands, detenaning property over the natural area.
Transumando invites people to embrace the ancient tradition of
accompanying the shepherds in their seasonal trip from the city
to the mountain pastures.

					
The Zegna family established industrial production of wool
textile and male garments shaping the Valley’s landscape and
pastoral society since 1910. Ermenegildo Zegna lead the Biellese
XX century heavy industrialization and the Made in Italy textile
production - high quality cashmere and merinos imported from
Australia and Asia through british colonial trades - leaving a
clear mark of how industrial capitalist ideology owns the rightto disrupt social and environmental ecologies. Since the earliest
downfall of the industrial era, Biella had been transforming into
a decadent scenario of abandoned lands and closed factories; the
Sessera Valley, extracted of organic material and workforce, is
now highly anthropical and exploited by organised turism

Before starting the one month of residency in 2023 at Bulegoa z/b (Bilbao), I first
presented the project looking through my own geographical perspective, highlighting the relationship between nomadic pastoralis,
the extraction of natural resources and labour by the idustries,
and the unique kinship between the worlds of pre-capital an the one of the heavy indutry of the XX sentury. While performing
the shepherds interviews, I showed drawings, videos, and textiles
that were mentioned in the text, and served the water of the brand
Lauretana extracted in the Biella valley.

Maintenance of What? A place, a thing, an idea is a project I started
in 2018 at the Dutch Art Institute. It’s a broad research on the context of nomadic and semi-
nomadic pastoralism –meaning tranhumant– and its powerful
engagement with the maintenance of natural resources throughout
extended geographies, disrupting the barriers imposed by private
land property and law.

In the one month residency at Buleoga z/b I gave it the chance to take a different direction.

				
			
		
	


The Basque Countries didin’t hold on to a tradition of extended
transhumances because land division doesn’t hallow easy passage
of live stock. Pastoral properties are not very large so shephers
preactice “transmitencia” meaning fast and short movements to an
other location near by, for example to a higher grazing for the all
summer.Nevertheless, I soon had again the reassurance that pastoral
cultures communicate to eachother from over the world. Nomadic
shepherding didn’t radically transformed throughout the millenials
as much as it holds on to incredible similaries everywhere. Thereis the feeling that shepherds can understand eachother even if
practicing within culures that come from very different roots.

					
The research transformed into the game of “finding the shepherd”,
no matter in what form:I found people, artists, artworks, researchers, stories, businesses,
friends, animals, families, and books.

Elena Galan had been one of my main sources. She’s a researcher
on chilmate change and agricultural policies in the Basque
Countries, and she’s a shepherd as well. In the Summer she goes
to the French Navarre with her dog Oki to take care of a flock on a
mountain. Through Elena I’ve learned about researches that study
sheep intelligence through their pattern of movements.

					
She also introduced me to other young women who traver the
world while studying and being shepherds, advocating for
climate justice and sustainability within a large social web. Our
conversation is recorded in an aoudio piece and translated into
“written maps”.

Video work (in progress)&#38;nbsp;IN THE TERRITORY OF ELENA GALAN.
Through Elena I discovered the book of Sandra Ott “The Circleof Mountains. A basque shepherding community”, publishedin 1981. This etnographic research is her PHD and one of the
greatest books written on basque pastoral culture. In the villageof Sainte-Engrace, in the southeastern corner of Soule (France), a
community sturvived for centuries with a strict system of social and
labor roles based on rotation and replacement.

					
Elena introduced me to her way of shepherding and taking care of
animals in connection to practices such drawing and weaving, ways
of archiving, reducing to the minimum, and other things. Her note
book looked like an artwork to me.

					
I also encountered the audio and praphic work of the basque artist
Nader Kootchaki on bells “Dorsal Landscape”. As he narrated to
me, he had met Sandra Ott himself while visiting Sainte-Engrace
for producing a commissioned artwork.

Video work (in progress)&#38;nbsp;A QUESTION OF PRODUCTION AND
PRESERVATION.The rest of the research deepened into the material of wool as a primary element that survives human kind and represent life
circles. The main part of the video combines the images from the
visit to an old wool factory, now closed, with the sound of a guided
tour in an underground cave.

Voli Radicali is an imaginative trip through the connection that humans establish with foreign plant species able to radicate in new ecologies by subverting the ecological status quo. The protagonist of this flight by Resta Qui Airlines is the alien invasive species Reynoutria Japonica. Also called Japanese Knot, in the last decades this ryzomatic species was found to be invasive in many fluvial geographies of Italy and Europe. No exeption is the area along the Agogna river, in the village of Ameno (Lake Orta area). How do we relate to our local, known ecology when this is a hybrid of global, colonial trades and capitalist migrations?What is the relationship between an “exotic” elsewhere and the wilderness surrounding our localities? What do we mean for wilderness and where do we go when we are looking for it? Why do we look for the wild id the first place?And what’s our desire to grow roots?&#38;nbsp; The work is a choreography of text, gestures, LIS signs (Italian sign language), and sound performed by two flight attendants. The stage and the view is a composition of sculptural elements. Resta Qui Airlines’ performative pretext is a constant game contrapposing an hi-tech model of transportation (the airline company) to a slow observation and materialist imagination of organic movements. Voli Radicali wants to evoke a new perception of “wilderness” that can deepen our relation of interdependence with plants and the complexity of non-cerebral subjects.

Prodotto con il sostegno di Cross Festival. Sound design e composizioni originali di Tommaso Esposito; con il supporto di Veronica Lumazza, assistente alle disabilità sensoriali; con il contributo di Nik e Piggi nei cori polifonici.


Installazione: ceramica, argilla, stoffa, carta, metallo, piante; degustazione cibi e bevande aperta al pubblico; microfoni e impianto audio; spazi interni e/o esterni.
Voli Radicali è un’azione performativa che invita il pubblico a seguire una lettura e coreografia di gesti, segni, elementi scultorei e composizioni audio in un viaggio immaginativo verso mete esotiche. 
Talvolta, i luoghi che sogniamo di raggiungere rivelano un paesaggio molto simile a quello che già abitiamo, ovvero un territorio di cui abbiamo modellato forme, funzioni e attività produttive, ma che ora ci appare tanto “selvaggio” da non sapervici più orientare. 
In questo dialogo tra diversi registri narrativi, gesti e segni “muti” in lingua LIS, nella sovrapposizione tra il luogo presente e l’altrove, le assistenti di volo portano il soggetto della narrazione ad alternarsi tra il “noi” e l’ “altro”: tra i “viaggiatori” e la specie vegetale asiatica Reynoutria Japonica. Al pubblico viene posta la domanda su chi dei due si trovi in territorio altrui. 
Detta anche Poligono del Giappone, in Europa questa specie vegetale viene considerata aliena ed altamente invasiva, senza antagonisti o metodi efficienti di eradicazione. In spazi lasciati all’abbandono, grazie alla sua struttura rizomatica, si dimostra capace di rovesciare l’ordine prestabilito tra Uomo e Natura, trasformandosi da preda a predatore in una sorta di ammasso radicale in espansione. 


La performance è accompagnata da una degustazione di cibi e bevande a base di Reynoutria Japonica, ad opera dalla chef ed esperta in alimurgia Eleonora Matarrese. 
Nell’intricato scambio tra occupante e spazio invaso, l’azione di ingerire la Reynoutria Japonica porta con sé una riflessione sulla storia migratoria delle specie vegetali, ma anche sulla necessità di accettare il nostro eco-sistema –profondamente antropizzato– come un organismo vivente e valido all’interno del corpo sociale, con tutta la sua forza di includere e inglobare attraverso connessioni di interdipendenza.
